This technique was developed over ninety years ago by German athlete Joseph Pilates. It is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the whole body without increasing volume. More than physical training, Pilates uses a series of controlled movements attractive to both the mind and the body. The Pilates technique integrates Eastern and Western theories and relates the practice of specific exercises coupled with breathing techniques.

Joseph Pilates designed more than 600 movements or exercises to be performed by oneself or with specific devices. Can be practiced on the ground using one's body weight to provide resistance or on specialized equipment designed to guide and train the body.

Pilates can be practiced by anyone regardless of age and fitness. The workout can be designed to accommodate the specific physical conditions of a person or fitness goals. Pilates can also be integrated as part of rehabilitation exercises or physical therapy programs designed to recover more quickly from injuries of certain tissues or to prevent them.
